The Ponte Vella (Old Bridge) is one of the oldest and most beautiful bridges in the Iberian Peninsula. Roman in origin, it was rebuilt in medieval times on the same foundations, crossing the Río Miño at its narrowest point below the old city. Its seven arches span 150 metres, and the central arch is high enough to allow boats to pass.
The bridge is now pedestrian-only and forms part of the riverbank promenade. Below it, in the warm months, locals use the free thermal pools along the south bank of the Miño — hot spring water that bubbles up through the riverbed at around 65°C, cooled by the river to a comfortable bathing temperature. Walking the bridge at dusk with views upstream and the old city above is one of the better experiences in Galicia.
