Colexiata de Santiago

The parish church of Santiago de Redondela stands at the heart of the old town, a solid baroque structure that anchors the historic centre. As a stop on the Camino Portugués, the church holds particular significance for pilgrims — the shell motif appears throughout the building, and a stone marker in the square outside notes the distance to Santiago de Compostela. The church itself is relatively plain by Galician baroque standards, but the square around it is a good place to sit and watch the morning pilgrims pass.

The interior has a carved altarpiece and several pieces of Galician religious sculpture worth a brief look. The tower offers the best close-up view of the nearer railway viaduct — an odd juxtaposition of the medieval and the industrial that is very characteristic of this part of Galicia.
