Viaduct of Madrid

The older of Redondela's two great railway viaducts, the Viaduct of Madrid was completed in 1876 and declared a site of Cultural Interest in 1978. Its 15 stone arches carry the Vigo–Ourense main line high above the town, and the effect from below — especially when a train rumbles across — is genuinely dramatic. The viaduct gives Redondela its nickname, A Vila dos Viaductos.

The best view is from the Alameda park below, or from the nearby streets where the arches frame the ría in the distance. Both viaducts are lit at night, making the walk along the old town atmospheric after dark.

A story
The Viaduct of Madrid was inaugurated in 1876. When the first locomotive crossed it, local residents reportedly gathered in the streets below — not quite sure whether to applaud or flee. The train still runs today on the same arches, and the rumble overhead feels much the same.
