Iglesia de Santa María la Mayor

The 18th-century parish church on the town's main square, with a baroque facade and notable side chapels

The parish church on the central plaza of Verín was rebuilt in the 18th century on the site of an earlier medieval chapel. The granite facade is a restrained provincial baroque, with a single ornate portal flanked by pilasters and topped by a curved pediment. The two bell towers were added later and give the church its dominant profile on the town's skyline.

The interior is single-nave with a number of gilded baroque retablos (altarpieces) in the side chapels; the high altar is a 19th-century replacement. The church is the focal point of the town's religious life and is where the Entroido figures gather on Ash Wednesday for the symbolic burial of the carnival. Generally open in the mornings and before Mass.
