Cava Baja

Concentrated tapas street in La Latina — bars and tabernas lining a single 300-metre slope

The most concentrated tapas street in Madrid — a single sloping street of about 300 metres in La Latina with twenty-odd tapas bars, tabernas, and restaurants opening their doors more or less continuously from midday until 2 am. The clientele is a mix of Madrileños doing a proper tapas crawl, serious food tourists, and the Sunday lunchtime crowd spilling over from El Rastro.

Standout addresses on the street include Txirimiri (pintxos), El Almendro 13 (tostas and vermouth), and Casa Lucas (creative tapas). The street runs from Plaza Puerta Cerrada down to Plaza de la Cebada. The best approach is to go without a plan — walk the whole street, pick somewhere with an open table, and work your way up or down. Metro La Latina.
