The most rewarding day trips from Benicàssim run north and inland. Peñíscola, half an hour up the coast, has a spectacular medieval castle rising on a rocky promontory above a whitewashed old town, with a small but excellent beach below. Morella, an hour and a half inland, is one of Spain's finest preserved walled hill towns and the seat of an extraordinary clifftop castle. Closer to home, the regional capital Castelló de la Plana is 15 minutes by train and worth half a day. South, Valencia is around 90 minutes away and an easy day out by train.
