Festival Internacional de Benicàssim (FIB)

One of Spain's biggest summer music festivals, every July

The Festival Internacional de Benicàssim — universally known as FIB — is one of the longest-running and biggest indie-rock and electronic-music festivals in southern Europe, held every July on a purpose-built site at the edge of town. Past headliners include the Beastie Boys, Radiohead, Bob Dylan, Arctic Monkeys, Iggy Pop, Kasabian, Liam Gallagher, Florence and the Machine — the line-up reliably mixes major guitar acts with electronic, hip-hop and dance acts on multiple stages until dawn.

The crowd is heavily British, often described as "Glastonbury in the sun"; Spanish-speakers are a minority and the official languages of the festival are Spanish and English. Camping at the on-site campground is the standard accommodation; the festival roughly triples the town's population for the week. Tickets sell out months in advance.

A story
FIB began in 1995 with around 5,000 attendees at the local football ground. By the mid-2000s, drawn by a strong indie line-up and a cheaper, sunnier alternative to Glastonbury, it was attracting more than 50,000 fans a night and was effectively a British festival in Spanish exile — to the point where local Spaniards joked that the only way to get a paella in town in July was to order it in English.
