Requena

Valencian wine town with a medieval old quarter built over old caves and cellars.

Requena sits inland from Valencia, where the coastal plain gives way to Bobal vineyards and a tougher Castilian edge. Its old quarter, La Villa, is the reason to stop: a medieval knot of lanes, churches, walls, and caves cut into the soft limestone under the streets.

The Cuevas de la Villa are the town's strongest anchor. They were used as cellars, silos, shelters, and ossuaries, and they make Requena feel less like another pretty hill town and more like a place with a second city underneath it. Above ground, the Torre del Homenaje and Iglesia del Salvador keep the medieval frame intact.

Wine gives Requena its present-day identity. The Palacio del Cid wine museum is a useful introduction before you move on to the wider Utiel-Requena wine country. Requena is not a major destination on its own, but it is a good one-day detour from Valencia if caves, old stone, and local wine sound better than another city afternoon.
