Riksgränsen

Arctic Swedish border ski resort known for late-season snow, off-piste terrain, and midnight-sun skiing.

Riksgränsen is Sweden's far-north border resort, wedged against Norway on the railway between Kiruna and Narvik. It is small, seasonal, and very much a ski place, but it has a stronger identity than an ordinary resort strip: this is one of the northernmost lift-served ski areas in the world, with a season that runs toward the midnight sun.

The appeal is snow, not town life. In late winter and spring, skiers come for off-piste terrain, high-latitude light, and the odd pleasure of riding lifts when most European ski areas are already thinking about summer. The Riksgränsen ski area is the anchor, while the railway station and nearby Katterjåkk make it unusually easy to reach for somewhere this remote.

Outside ski season, treat Riksgränsen as a compact mountain base rather than a full destination. The broader Abisko and Björkliden area has the deeper year-round range, but if you are already crossing between Kiruna and Narvik, Riksgränsen gives the border mountains a sharp, memorable stop.

Guide

Getting There

Riksgränsen is on the Malmbanan railway between Kiruna and Narvik, and the station is within walking distance of the slopes. Trains make it far easier to reach than most Arctic mountain resorts, especially if you are crossing northern Sweden and Norway without a car.

By road, the E10 runs past Riksgränsen and continues over the border toward Narvik. Winter conditions can be serious, so check weather and road information before driving.
