Hjo Church

The current Hjo Church (Hjo kyrka) replaces a medieval predecessor that burned in the great fire of 1794. Built in the late Gustavian style and consecrated in 1799, it is a simple rectangular hall with a tall western tower, painted plain white. Inside, the altar and pulpit are 19th-century additions and the ceiling carries painted decoration that lifts what would otherwise be an austere space.

The church sits at the top of the town near the square and remains the most visible landmark from the lake. It is usually open during the day in summer; opening hours are shorter the rest of the year.

A story
The medieval church on this site burned to the ground in 1794. The current building, completed in 1799, is a plain Gustavian replacement — striking for the contrast between its sober white exterior and the bright interior decoration added in the 19th century.
