Town Park and Spa

The Stadspark (Town Park) runs along the lakeshore south of the harbour. It was laid out in the spa era of the late 19th century, when Hjo briefly competed with the larger Swedish resorts for summer guests. The grounds keep the gentle layout of that period: paths winding under tall trees, a pavilion, and views across the water to Vättern's far shore.

The wooden Stora Hotellet (now restored and used for events) and the bandstand are the surviving spa-era set pieces. The park is the obvious place for a picnic, a swim from the small beach, or simply a slow walk to look at Vättern. In summer there are still occasional outdoor concerts.

A story
Hjo's status as a spa town dates to 1878, when iron-rich water was found in the park. For a few decades around the turn of the 20th century the town drew middle-class Swedes who came to drink the water, walk in the park, and listen to band concerts in the wooden pavilion.
