Växjö is the main inland city of Småland, surrounded by lakes and forest. It is a practical base for the Kingdom of Crystal, but it also has enough of its own character: a twin-spired cathedral, a strong regional museum, university life, and good access to the countryside.
The city has worked hard to present itself as green and livable, and it feels more like a compact lake city than a formal provincial capital. The centre is easy to walk, with the station, cathedral, museums, and lakes all close enough for a relaxed day.
Växjö is also one of the best places to understand Småland's emigration story. Many Swedes who left for North America in the 19th century came from this region, and the museums here make that history feel local rather than abstract.
