Östermalms Saluhall is Stockholm's grandest food hall, a red-brick market building on Östermalmstorg that opened in 1888 and reopened in 2020 after a meticulous restoration. Under its high iron-and-timber roof, marble and wood counters sell reindeer and elk charcuterie, Swedish cheeses, smoked and fresh seafood, game, bread, and pastries — the produce that makes Östermalm the city's gourmet quarter.
It is as much a place to eat as to shop. Several stalls have small counters and restaurants where you can sit down to a plate of toast Skagen, herring, or a seafood platter, and the quality is high to match the prices. Come hungry, wander the aisles first, and pick wherever looks best. It is one of the most atmospheric stops in the neighbourhood and a fine introduction to Swedish food.
