The Armémuseum covers five hundred years of Swedish military history, from the Viking age through the Cold War, housed in a former arsenal building on Riddargatan. The permanent exhibitions go well beyond uniforms and cannons — entire rooms reconstruct battle scenes with life-size figures, sound effects, and period sets that make the horrors of war visceral rather than abstract. The top floor covers Sweden's path from great power to neutral state, with fascinating material on the country's Cold War preparations. Free admission, well-curated, and rarely crowded compared to the Vasa Museum down the road.
