Ofvandahls

A 19th-century konditori still serving its original pastries

Ofvandahls is the oldest surviving konditori in Uppsala, in business on Sysslomansgatan since 1878. The interior is a small museum in itself — original mirrors, art-nouveau tile, marble-topped tables — and the cake counter still produces the classic Swedish pastries that have been the house repertoire for over a century. Princess cake, almond tarts, and the cinnamon and cardamom buns are all worth crossing town for.

There is a small back garden for warm-weather coffee. Cash and card accepted; no reservations. Open daily from breakfast to early evening.

A story
Ofvandahls opened in 1878 and has been more or less continuously frequented by Uppsala students ever since — the writer Hjalmar Söderberg used it as a setting, and the café still keeps a guestbook with the signatures of generations of poets, professors, and at least one Nobel laureate.
