City Wall

Superbly preserved 3.5 km medieval ring wall

The 3.5-kilometre ring wall encircling Visby's old town is one of the best-preserved medieval fortifications in northern Europe. Forty-four of its original towers survive, and you can walk virtually the entire circuit along the outside. The north stretch offers the most dramatic views — the towers loom over terraced gardens and limestone cliffs dropping toward the sea. Enter through the main Österport (East Gate) or Norderport (North Gate) for the full theatrical effect.

A story
After Valdemar Atterdag's Danish army sacked and looted Visby in 1361, the victorious king allegedly demanded that the townspeople fill three large barrels with gold and silver as ransom. When they could not, he took everything else instead. The incident is commemorated during Medieval Week each August.
