Berghotel Schatzalp is a Belle Époque former sanatorium perched 300 metres above Davos Platz, accessible only by a small mountain funicular (the Schatzalpbahn, running since 1899) or a 45-minute walk up through the forest. Built in 1900 as one of the grand tuberculosis sanitariums for which Davos was famous, it is now a hotel and one of the most atmospheric buildings in Switzerland.
The terrace has sweeping views over the valley and is open to non-guests for coffee and lunch. The botanical garden on the terrace — the highest alpine botanical garden in Europe, at 1,861 m — is in bloom from June to September with hundreds of rare alpine and mountain plants. In winter, the Schatzalp ski area directly above the hotel is the smallest and quietest of Davos's ski zones. The funicular from Davos Platz runs until late evening.
