Château Saint-Maire

Lausanne's Gothic-Burgundian castle, now seat of the cantonal government

The Château Saint-Maire towers above the old town, its cylindrical corner towers and austere brick facade making it one of the most recognisable buildings in Lausanne. Built between 1397 and 1430, it served as the residence of the bishops of Lausanne and later became the seat of the cantonal government, a role it still holds.

The exterior is best appreciated from the esplanade in front, which offers fine views down over the rooftops toward the lake. The interior is not generally open to visitors, but the building can be seen up close and forms a natural endpoint to a walk through the old town from the cathedral. The nearby market garden and park are good for a pause.
