The heart of the old town and the site of Lausanne's Wednesday and Saturday morning markets. The square is framed by painted medieval buildings and the 17th-century Hôtel de Ville. An animated clock on the building facade puts on a brief show of historical figures every hour. From here, the covered Escaliers du Marché climb steeply up to the cathedral — one of the most atmospheric walks in the city.
