Things to Do

Zug's old town is compact and best explored on foot. The Zytturm, a medieval clock tower decorated with an astronomical clock, anchors the centre. Nearby, Zug Castle — a low, distinctive tower that survived the 1435 landslide that destroyed much of the medieval town — houses a local history museum. The lakeside promenade runs for several kilometres and is excellent for cycling or walking, with views across to the mountains on clear days.

The Zugerberg, a low mountain immediately east of the city, is reached by a historic funicular from the Schönegg neighbourhood. The plateau at the top has forest walks, a panoramic view over the lake and city, and a handful of restaurants. It makes an easy half-day from the city centre. In summer, Lake Zug itself is swimmable from several lido areas along the shore.
