Zugerberg

The Zugerberg is a forested plateau rising to about 1000 metres east of the city, reached by the Zugerberg Funicular from the Schönegg district — a short bus ride from the railway station. The ascent takes about 10 minutes and delivers you to a plateau with a network of marked walking trails through beech and fir forest.

The views from the top are among the best in the canton: south over Lake Zug to the Alps, west over the city, and on clear days north towards the Jura range. Several restaurants at the summit serve traditional Swiss food. The Zugerberg is also a cross-country skiing destination in winter when snow conditions allow. The funicular runs year-round and takes bicycles.

A story
The Zugerberg Funicular opened in 1907 as a private rail line serving a sanatorium at the mountain's summit. Tuberculosis patients were sent there for the clean air and rest — the same reason that drove similar mountain railways across Switzerland in the early twentieth century. The sanatorium has long since closed, replaced by the Institut Montana international school, but the funicular still runs on the original route.
