Zytturm

The Zytturm (clock tower) is the defining landmark of Zug's old town, a square medieval tower that has stood at the heart of the city since the thirteenth century. Its painted façade is decorated with the Zug cantonal colours, and the tower carries an astronomical clock on its western face. It stands at the junction of two main pedestrian streets and serves as the natural orientation point for exploring the old town.

The tower is not open for interior visits, but it can be admired from the adjacent café terraces and the small square at its base. The painted decoration has been restored and is vivid on sunny days.

A story
The astronomical clock on the Zytturm was added in 1557 — nearly two centuries after the tower itself was built. It shows not just the time but the phases of the moon and the position of the sun in the zodiac, making it one of the more complex public clocks in Switzerland. The tower also served as a prison; the upper floors were used to hold debtors and minor criminals well into the eighteenth century.
