A long river island in the Dnieper, connected to the city by bridges, with parkland, beaches, the St Nicholas Cathedral, and a statue of Taras Shevchenko. The island has been inhabited since antiquity and takes its name from a Byzantine monastery destroyed by the Mongols. Today it functions as the city's main green space and riverside recreation area — popular with locals for walking, cycling, and sunbathing on the river beaches in summer.
