The Cathedral of the Transfiguration, built by order of Catherine the Great in 1787, stands on the central Soborna Square and is one of the oldest surviving buildings in the city. Its neoclassical exterior was restored after Soviet-era damage. The cathedral is active and open to visitors; the interior has the layered iconostasis typical of Ukrainian Orthodox churches.
