Opened in 2009 and home to Shakhtar Donetsk, the Donbas Arena was one of the most modern football stadiums in Eastern Europe at the time of its construction. The 52,000-seat bowl was built to UEFA Elite grade, with a retractable roof and a striking illuminated facade. It hosted several matches during UEFA Euro 2012. The stadium stands empty since the conflict began in 2014 and has been damaged by shelling.
