This Soviet-era monument near Teatralna Square commemorates the Red Army soldiers who liberated Donetsk (then Stalino) from German occupation in 1943. A tall obelisk topped with a stylised torch rises above bronze figures of Soviet soldiers and workers. Like most Soviet monuments in the city, it occupied a prominent civic position and was part of the landscape of official memory that shaped how the city thought of its own history.
