Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the principal Roman Catholic church in Kharkiv, serving the city's small but historically significant Polish and other Catholic communities. The building dates from the late 19th century and was designed in a neo-Gothic style, its twin spires a distinctive landmark in the city centre near Freedom Square.

Like most religious buildings in Kharkiv, the cathedral was closed and repurposed during the Soviet period — it served as a concert hall and recording studio, which at least meant the acoustics were maintained. Returned to the Catholic community after Ukrainian independence, it has been carefully restored and remains an active parish church. The interior is simpler than many Central European Catholic cathedrals but the building's exterior, particularly the facade with its Gothic lancet windows, is among the more elegant pieces of pre-revolutionary religious architecture in the city.
