Barabashovo Market

Barabashovo is one of the largest wholesale and retail markets in Europe — a vast open-air and covered labyrinth of stalls selling everything from tools and electronics to clothing, food, cosmetics, and car parts. At its peak before the 2022 conflict, it employed tens of thousands of traders and attracted buyers from across Ukraine and neighbouring countries. The scale is genuinely disorienting: you can walk for half an hour in one direction and still be inside the market.

It is not primarily a tourist destination, but as a window into the informal economy of eastern Ukraine — the trading networks, the improvised logistics, the atmosphere of an entire city within a city — it is fascinating. Budget at least two hours if you plan to explore it seriously. The market is served by the Barabashova metro station.
