The Mirror Stream (Dzerkalnyi Strumin) is a long reflecting pool and fountain complex at the edge of Freedom Square, one of the most popular gathering spots in Kharkiv. The name comes from the perfectly flat mirror of water that channels between two curved white colonnades, reflecting the sky and the surrounding buildings in a way that somehow makes the vast square feel intimate.
Built in the Soviet period and recently restored, the fountain is at its best in summer evenings when Kharkiv residents congregate here — students from the nearby universities, families, musicians who set up informally along the colonnade. The water feature is illuminated at night, and the colonnades provide a natural shelter from wind. It is one of those public spaces that a city needs not for its monuments but for its people.
