Kharkiv Land Bank Building

The Kharkiv Land Bank Building is one of the finest examples of pre-revolutionary commercial architecture surviving in the city centre — a handsome Art Nouveau structure completed in the early 20th century when Kharkiv was a prosperous industrial and commercial city in the Russian Empire. The facade features the sinuous decorative elements and asymmetric massing characteristic of the style.

The building stands near the intersection of Pushkinska Street and the city centre, and walking this stretch of Pushkinska — with its mix of Art Nouveau, Neoclassical, and early Modernist facades — gives a sense of what Kharkiv looked like before the Soviet period radically altered the urban landscape. Many comparable buildings in this area were demolished during Soviet reconstruction; the Land Bank Building's survival makes it particularly valuable.
