Zhovkva is a compact historic town north of Lviv, laid out in the Renaissance period around a planned market square, castle, churches, and defensive walls. Its scale makes the urban design easy to read: the square, arcaded houses, religious buildings, and former magnate residence sit close enough together for a slow walk.
The town's Jewish, Polish, Ukrainian, and royal histories overlap in a way that gives Zhovkva more depth than its size suggests. War and neglect have left scars, and access conditions in Ukraine should be checked carefully, but as a cultural day trip from Lviv it remains one of the region's most rewarding small-town excursions.
