Mother-in-Law Bridge

A pedestrian footbridge decorated with thousands of padlocks, with a view over the port

The Mother-in-Law Bridge (Tyoshchin Most) is a slender pedestrian footbridge suspended over a ravine at the edge of the city centre, offering one of the better views of Odessa's port and the sea beyond. Its informal name comes from a Soviet-era story: a local Communist Party official allegedly had the bridge built specifically so his wife could visit her mother without walking around the ravine.

The railing is now heavily encrusted with padlocks — the European couples' tradition arrived in Odessa with a vengeance — and the bridge has a slightly precarious, swaying quality that adds to the charm. It is a genuine Odessa peculiarity, worth the walk out to it.
