Belgrave Hall

A small Georgian manor house in the Belgrave suburb, built in 1709 and now a free museum of 18th- and 19th-century domestic life. The house is presented as it would have appeared in different periods, with period furniture, kitchen equipment, and costume pieces helping to show how people of the prosperous merchant class lived.

The walled garden is pleasant and kept in period style. The house is genuinely atmospheric in a quiet way — it doesn't have the dramatic draw of the Richard III centre, but it gives a good sense of life in provincial England before the industrial revolution transformed everything around it. The walk from the city centre through Belgrave to reach it takes you past the beginning of Belgrave Road.
