Kirby Muxloe Castle

Atmospheric moated brick castle ruin west of Leicester, left unfinished after a Tudor political downfall.

Kirby Muxloe Castle is a handsome, half-finished statement of late medieval ambition: red brick towers, a moat, and the outline of a grand house that never became the power base its owner imagined. Work stopped after William, Lord Hastings, was executed in 1483, leaving the ruin with a sharper story than many tidier castles.

It is a short excursion from Leicester rather than an all-day sight. Come for the brickwork, the quiet village setting, and the sense of a Tudor future interrupted before it had time to settle into stone.
