The Ancient House on Tavern Street is Ipswich's most photogenic building — a 15th-century timber-framed structure with extraordinary 17th-century pargeting on its exterior walls. The decorative plasterwork panels depict biblical scenes, heraldic devices, and allegorical figures of the continents. It is one of the finest examples of pargeting in England.
The building is now occupied by a bookshop (Lakeland), which means you can go inside without any pretence — though the interior is less impressive than the exterior. Worth stopping in front of for a few minutes to look at the façade in detail.
