Cardinal Wolsey's Gate

Cardinal Wolsey's Gate is the only surviving remnant of the college that Henry VIII's powerful minister began building in Ipswich in the late 1520s. The red-brick gateway with its terracotta decorative panels is a handsome example of Tudor architecture, and its story — Wolsey's fall from grace cut the project short — makes it more interesting than its modest scale suggests.

The gate stands on College Street, a short walk from the town centre. Entry is free and it can be seen at any time. A small panel explains the history.

A story
Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, Henry VIII's all-powerful Lord Chancellor, was born in Ipswich around 1473. He began building a college in his home town to rival Oxford — but fell from royal favour in 1529 before it was completed. The gateway is all that was built. Within a year Wolsey was dead, facing treason charges that would certainly have seen him executed. Only the gate remains, a monument to overreach.
