Claremont Pier is a traditional Victorian seaside pier on Lowestoft's South Beach, stretching about 200 metres into the North Sea. Built in 1903, it served as an entertainment venue and landing stage for paddle steamers for much of the 20th century. Today it has been restored and functions as a fishing pier.
The pier marks the southern end of the main beach, and the view back toward the town from its end gives a good sense of Lowestoft's seafront. South Beach itself is a broad sandy beach backed by beach huts — one of the better stretches of coast on the Suffolk shore, sheltered from the worst of the North Sea by the harbour's outer breakwaters.
