Lowestoft Lighthouse

The Lowestoft High Lighthouse is a striking white tower on the clifftop north of the town centre, operated by Trinity House. Built in 1874, it replaced an earlier beacon that had guided ships into the harbour since the 16th century. The lighthouse stands at a height that makes it visible from well out to sea — useful given that the coast here is particularly flat and featureless.

The lighthouse is not generally open to the public, but it can be seen clearly from the surrounding streets and from the beach below. Its clean white tower and red lantern are a photogenic fixture of the northern seafront, and walking up to the clifftop gives good views back over the harbour and the town.
