Devonshire Park and Congress Theatre

The tennis and theatre complex that gives Eastbourne a cultural life beyond the seafront

Devonshire Park is the cultural heart of inland Eastbourne — a Victorian public park containing two theatres, a lawn tennis club, and the Towner Gallery. The Congress Theatre (1963) is the town's main venue for touring productions, musicals, and concerts; the adjacent Devonshire Park Theatre (1884) hosts smaller shows in a well-preserved Victorian interior. The Devonshire Park Lawn Tennis Club hosts the Eastbourne International, a prestigious pre-Wimbledon grass court tournament that takes place each June, drawing top-ranked players as a warm-up for the Championships.

The park itself is pleasant for a stroll between venues, with well-maintained gardens and the slightly faded grandeur typical of English seaside resort infrastructure. The area around the park, on the western edge of the town centre, is quieter and more residential than the seafront.
