Painshill Landscape Garden

Restored 18th-century landscape garden near Cobham, designed as a walk through crafted views and follies

Painshill is a set-piece English landscape garden, created in the 18th century as a sequence of views rather than a flower display. Paths move past water, trees, bridges, a ruined abbey, a Gothic temple, and the famous crystal grotto, all arranged to feel natural while being completely deliberate.

It is closer to Cobham than Guildford, but it belongs on a Guildford-area itinerary because it is one of Surrey's strongest historic gardens. Give it time: the pleasure is in walking the circuit and letting each staged scene appear, not in rushing to a single central house.
