Chagford is a small moorland town on the eastern edge of Dartmoor, historically one of the four Stannary towns that governed the tin-mining industry — these towns had their own laws and courts, independent of the Crown.
The surrounding landscape is wild and spectacular, with some of the best Bronze Age remains on Dartmoor, including stone rows, hut circles, and the Scorhill Stone Circle a short walk from town. Chagford itself has a handsome market square, the church of St Michael the Archangel, and the medieval Three Crowns Hotel anchoring the square. The Teign Gorge and Fingle Bridge are within walking distance, and Castle Drogo — the last castle built in England, designed by Edwin Lutyens — is three miles to the northwest.
