Mompesson House

An elegant Queen Anne townhouse of 1701 on the north side of the cathedral close, now in the care of the National Trust. The interior has been preserved almost entirely as it was in the eighteenth century: rococo plasterwork ceilings, period furniture, a collection of English drinking glasses, and a walled garden at the back. The house appeared as Barton Park in the 1995 film adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, which means it looks oddly familiar to many visitors even on a first visit.

Entry is free for National Trust members; gardens are sometimes open without house admission.
