A large medieval parish church in the city centre, a short walk from the Market Place. The interior is dominated by an enormous 'Doom' painting above the chancel arch — a Last Judgement scene painted around 1470 and measuring nearly ten metres wide. Christ sits in judgement over the saved and the damned, with the saved rising on the left and the damned being herded into the jaws of Hell on the right. It is the largest doom painting in England and survived the Reformation only because it was whitewashed over and forgotten until the nineteenth century.
