Housed in the King's House, a beautiful Grade I listed medieval and Tudor building on the west side of the cathedral close, the Salisbury Museum holds the most important collection of Stonehenge and prehistoric Wiltshire material outside London. The Stonehenge gallery includes the skeleton and grave goods of the Stonehenge Archer — a Bell Beaker archer buried near the monument around 2300 BCE — along with Bronze Age metalwork and Neolithic flintwork from the Salisbury Plain.
The museum also covers the Roman settlement at Sorviodunum (Old Sarum) and the medieval city, with a thorough account of how the city moved from the hilltop to its present riverside site. Worth an hour or two before or after visiting Stonehenge.
