Weymouth

Dorset seaside town with a Georgian esplanade, working harbour, and easy access to the Jurassic Coast.

Weymouth is a seaside town on the Dorset coast with a sweeping Georgian esplanade, a working harbour, and easy access to the Jurassic Coast. King George III put it on the map when he came here to bathe in the 1780s, and the town has been drawing visitors ever since — though these days the crowd is more bucket-and-spade than royal.

The harbour is the liveliest part of town, with fishing boats, cafes, and restaurants packed along the quayside. The Nothe Fort stands guard at the harbour entrance and is worth an hour of anyone's time. But the real draw is the coastline: Chesil Beach stretches eighteen miles to the west, the Isle of Portland juts into the Channel to the south, and Lulworth Cove lies a short drive east — the whole stretch is UNESCO-listed for its extraordinary Jurassic geology.
