One of the finest small art galleries in the world, at the University of Birmingham in Edgbaston. The collection was assembled from the 1930s to the 1960s with a remit to buy only the best examples: the result is a compact gallery with extraordinary depth — Gainsborough, Degas, Manet, Monet, Renoir, Turner, Rubens, and Van Gogh among many others. Free admission. Often overlooked in favour of the city centre museums but worth the short journey.
