The canal-side area around Brindleyplace and Gas Street Basin has the most pleasant concentration of bars and cafes — outdoor seating in summer, and a younger professional crowd in the evenings. Broad Street is the main late-night strip and gets very busy on weekends; it is more chaotic than atmospheric. The Jewellery Quarter (around St Paul's Square and the nearby streets) has a quieter independent bar scene. Moseley, a southern suburb, has a village-centre feel with pubs and cafes that appeal more to students and locals.
Ronnie Scott's on Broad Street (the Birmingham outpost of the London jazz club) has live jazz most nights; the Glee Club is the main comedy venue. The Old Crown in Digbeth is one of Birmingham's oldest buildings (15th century) and still a functioning pub.
