The Bullring is the main shopping centre — Selfridges (with its famous aluminium-disc facade), Debenhams, and over 160 shops. The Mailbox, on Commercial Street near the canal, is a more upscale alternative with Harvey Nichols and designer brands. The historic markets in and around the Bullring include the outdoor market (one of Britain's largest), the indoor market, and the Rag Market for clothing and fabric. The Pallasades shopping centre above New Street station is more everyday.
For independent retail, the Jewellery Quarter and Moseley are better hunting grounds. The Custard Factory in Digbeth hosts independent design, fashion, and craft businesses. The outdoor markets around the Bullring are open daily and sell fresh produce, clothing, and household goods at keen prices.
