A working district about a mile northwest of the city centre, with over 100 jewellery businesses still operating — the UK's largest concentration of jewellery manufacturing. The Museum of the Jewellery Quarter on Vyse Street preserves the Smith and Pepper factory exactly as it was when it closed in 1981, with working machinery and tools in place. The area also has good independent cafes and bars, particularly around St Paul's Square, which is one of Birmingham's few surviving Georgian streetscapes.
