Snailbeach is a former lead-mining village in the Shropshire Hills, with enough surviving industrial remains to make the landscape readable rather than merely pretty. Engine houses, shafts, spoil heaps, and old railway traces sit among wooded hills, giving a very different day out from Shrewsbury's medieval streets.
It works best for travellers with a car or a strong interest in industrial history. The village is not a conventional museum site with everything neatly explained at the roadside, so a little preparation helps. Combine it with a wider Shropshire Hills loop if you want open country after the town.
